(Victor Valley)– When a new Millarworld book hits the shelves, fans should listen. The track record for amazing titles cannot be denied: Kick-Ass, Chrononauts, Huck, Prodigy, Kingsmen: The Secret Service- the list goes on. So when Space Bandits hit, you know I had to take notice.
From Mark Millar, Matteo Scalera, Marcelo Maiolo, and Clem Robins, the first issue kicks off in what is sure to be a tale of two ladies set on revenge. We first meet Cody Blue, a highly intelligent yet remorseful thief who uses her mind more than brute force. But after the last heist she orchestrated with her band of bandits, they double cross her and leave her for dead. Then we meet Thena Khole, another highly wanted thief who is using a con with her boyfriend to collect her own reward money. But when she is left high and dry, she ends up sent to The Crustacean, a hundred mile long dead lobster, now used to house the universe’s most dangerous prisoners. It is there she meets the injured Cody, two dangerous women with revenge on their minds.
Millar creates a very cool, 80’s inspired romp through space, and Scalera and the rest of the team knock out some amazing visuals! The designs of the space ships, like The Crustacean, and The Lionel Richie, are fantastic. The alien designs and human character designs are amazingly unique, and sticks in your memory. The issue reads like the set up to a buddy action flick, with an ending the feels like an amazing 80’s action film.
I am on board for Space Bandits. It exudes imagination and gives sci-fi fans something that feels new and original. In a world with recycled storylines and characters, it’s great to see some creativity and new blood.
