(Apple Valley)- We would like our students, parents and the community to know that Apple Valley Unified School District and the Apple Valley School Police Department work hand-in-hand with the officers and personnel at the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department and other law enforcement agencies, to create the safest schools possible.
Every threat, whether it be verbal, written or on social media, is taken seriously, and is investigated immediately and thoroughly. Action is taken when a threat is determined to be credible. In the past, investigations have shown that a large majority of these threats are made by students as a “joke”, “prank” or “hoax”. Sometimes these posts also depict “look-a-like” weapons.
Videos which depict violence or misbehavior on our school sites, or to and from school should be shared with school administration to aid in our efforts to investigate each incidence. Recent social media posts which tag or identify incidents on our campuses, were not current, but in each case had been fully investigated, with appropriate actions taken by both the school site administration and the AVUSD Police Department.
It is important for our students, our families, and our community to know the steps we take in each and every threat in coordination with the AVUSD School Police Department and the San Bernardino County Sheriff. There are serious consequences of making these types of “jokes”, “pranks”, or “hoaxes”. Regardless of their intention, these threats are unlawful and harmful. It is difficult to tell if a comment or video is a “joke”, “prank” or “hoax” until it has been investigated thoroughly. There could be criminal, civil, financial and administrative consequences. We continue to train our students, their families and staff, if you SEE OR HEAR SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING ! Our schools and student safety is everyone’s responsibility. We encourage you to contact school administration or use WeTiP at 1-800-78-CRIME or WeTip.com.
