Public Health celebrates National Health Center Week

By Staff Reports

(Victor Valley)– The Department of Public Health (DPH) invites the community to celebrate National Health Center Week (NHCW) from August 10-13. The theme this year is “Community Health Centers: Lighting the Way for Healthier Communities Today and in the Future!” Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, DPH health centers located in Adelanto, Hesperia, San Bernardino and Ontario will be providing information virtually, featuring different themes each day throughout the week, for the safety of the community.

The themes for NHCW this year include Community Health Day, Children’s Health Day, Collaborative Partner’s Day, and Patient Appreciation Day. On these days, educational material will be sent out to patients through the Patient Portal and will be accessible for the community on the program website at https://wp.sbcounty.gov/dph/programs/clinics.

“NHCW is a time to celebrate the success and delivery of high quality, cost-effective, and accessible care for the community,” said Jennifer Baptiste-Smith, Division Chief of Clinical Health & Prevention Services. “The unique model of care of the health centers offers integrated services based on the needs of the community. Throughout this pandemic period, DPH health centers continue providing preventive and primary care services to the community.”

NHCW offers health centers an opportunity to tell their story of a community-based model of care and services offered. The event is a part of a national campaign to increase awareness of the ways in which health centers are providing affordable health care in communities, as well as generate community pride and build support for the health center program. This NHCW, we will honor front line providers, staff, and beloved patients for their resiliency especially during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

On July 9, 2019, the County Board of Supervisors adopted a proclamation recognizing NHCW as a way to raise awareness about the mission and accomplishments of the DPH community health centers, also known as Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs).

NHCW community events are in line with the Countywide Vision to develop healthy communities and make healthcare accessible, by providing a range of services onsite – primary care, pediatrics, immunizations, reproductive health, prenatal care, mental health, tuberculosis (TB) screening, HIV testing and care and oral health services.
