(Victorville)– As Victor Valley College moves toward a new reality, Victor Valley College students make plans for the 2021-2022 academic year. On June 15, 2021, approximately 300 Victor Valley College students celebrated their achievements by driving through VVC’s campus as this year sets a record number in scholarship awards.
For the 2020-21 academic year, the Victor Valley College Foundation awarded $224,000 in scholarships. This year, the Foundation is set to award over $250,000 in awards with the number continuing to rise. This year’s increase in funds is due to the incredible assistance from surrounding communities that work to support Victor Valley College’s mission of Student Success.
“Scholarships have changed my life. Not only am I able to receive the financial assistance that alleviates the stress that comes with the journey, but I receive the chance to be a part of something bigger,” said Victor Valley College nursing student, Michael Baisa. “I’ve learned more about the power of philanthropy and I plan to share, guide, and help the future students studying to become Registered Nurses.”
With the effects of COVID-19 limiting the Foundation’s outreach efforts to virtual workshops, staff relied heavily on Zoom and online communication to support students with their application efforts.
“Victor Valley College students have an incredible capacity to do good. There are pressures that come with pursuing a higher education degree that may limit a student’s options. The scholarships open a door, and inspire students to be ambitious,” said Sam Grandlienard, the Victor Valley College Foundation Scholarship Chairperson. “We, as a community, believe in them and are grateful to offer in a small way a better path to reach their potential. They are the future and we are eager to see the good they will accomplish!”
While the obstacles of affording a college education may have increased during the 2020 year, the assistance and support from generous individuals, sponsors and endowment funds work to help aid students not only complete but achieve their educational goals.
The Foundation’s program continues to be the leading clearinghouse of scholarship awards for High Desert residents pursuing their education at Victor Valley College. They help nursing students learn to save lives, fuel education for aviation technicians in training, and pave the way for transfer students to advance their careers. In fact, awards are made to students pursuing just about every major the College offers and are typically given to those who demonstrate financial need, community service, or academic success. Applications are accepted at the beginning of the Victor Valley College’s Spring Semester to prepare for the following academic year.
