(Victorville)– The Victor Valley College Foundation announces High Desert Opportunity Summit will take place on October 21, 2021, at the SBC Fairgrounds. As the 2020 summit was held virtually and placed an emphasis on “Finding Focus”, High Desert Opportunity Summit 2021 will highlight how education fuels regional economic development.
Presented by Desert Valley Hospital/Desert Valley Medical Group, this year’s event will continue to display the High Desert’s business, economic and educational development within the region.
“We’re excited to be back at the SBC Fairgrounds,” said Shannon Shannon, Victor Valley College Foundation Board President. “We received the chance to collaborate with some incredible businesses and organizations last year as we put together the very first virtual summit. As extraordinary as that experience was, we’re thankful to come together once again to reflect on the growth and progress of our communities.”
American Two-Time Paralympian and former U.S. Army Officer, Melissa Stockwell, joins the event as the 2021 High Desert Opportunity Summit Keynote Speaker.
After graduating from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 2002, Melissa Stockwell was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army’s transportation corps. One month after being deployed to Iraq, in April 2004, she became the first female American soldier in history to lose a limb in active combat after her vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb. She was later honored with a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star for her service. Four years later, she became the first Iraq War veteran to qualify for the Paralympic Games, competing in swimming at the Beijing 2008 Paralympics. She was selected to be the flag bearer for Team USA at the Beijing closing ceremonies. Stockwell is currently headed to Tokyo for the 2020 Paralympic Game. More of her incredible journey will be shared on October 21 at the San Bernardino County Fairgrounds in Victorville.
High Desert Opportunity Summit will continue to feature an economic forecast, with this year’s to be presented by Adam Fowler, the Director of Research at the UC Riverside School of Business Center for Economic Forecasting and Development. Mr. Fowler leads the Center’s work in sustainable growth and development, and in housing, land use, and real estate. His projects focus on economic and workforce development strategies, environmental economics and domestic energy, housing and population trends, the creative economy and its workforce, public opinion and attitudes, public policy analysis, and regional economics. In addition to his role at the Center, he is also Director of Research at Beacon Economics.
Additionally, the summit will continue to feature multiple panel presentations that examine upcoming regional developments and opportunities. The Greater High Desert Chamber of Commerce Exhibitor Hall that offers local municipalities, utilities, and businesses the opportunity to display and interact with attendees will continue to take place as a part of the event.
“The GHDCC is thrilled to once again partner with the Victor Valley College Foundation to host the HDOS Exhibitor Hall,” said Mark Creffield, Greater High Desert Chamber of Commerce President/CEO. “This event always provides such valuable networking opportunities for local businesses and organizations.”
Proceeds of High Desert Opportunity Summit will benefit the Victor Valley College Foundation, which provides scholarship and grant opportunities to students at Victor Valley College.
