(Victor Valley)– The National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS) Chapter at Cal State San Bernardino earned Star Status for the 2020-21 academic year.
“The chapter has had consistent success in achieving Star Status over the years, which demonstrates the commitment CSUSB’s members have had to the organization’s three pillars of scholarship, leadership and service,” said David Marshall, CSUSB’s NSCS chapter advisor, director of the Honors Program and professor of English.
According to a letter by NSCS executive director Scott Mobley, the achievement of Star Status is coveted among more than 300 chapters throughout the country. All Star Chapters were leaders in implementing engaging, virtual student-centered events, creating meaningful experiences for their members.
“In a year of unprecedented challenges from the pandemic, the chapter’s accomplishments are indeed impressive,” Mobley said in the letter. “The chapter is committed to the ideals that NSCS holds dear. The Chapter Advisor, Dr. David Marshall, NSCS officers, members, and the entire community should take pride in the chapter’s accomplishments. Their exceptional work is not only a credit to them as a chapter, but as students at California State University, San Bernardino, as well.”
According to the NSCS website, the CSUSB NSCS chapter is a group of students that embody the spirit of commitment to scholarship, leadership and service, built upon a foundation of integrity.
“CSUSB has tremendous students, and NSCS has become a base from which many of them have been able to develop themselves as leaders while making a difference in the community,” said Marshall. “I was particularly proud of the 2020-21 officers for keeping the chapter active during the pandemic. They organized virtual events and a pen-pal program with residents in an assisted living community.”
Marshall credits Erin Ross, CSUSB NSCS chapter president, for much of the success they experienced in the past academic year.
“Chapter President Erin Ross was exceptional in her role and may be the most impressive president we’ve had in my time as advisor,” Marshall said.
NSCS is certified by the Association of College Honor Societies and is a nonprofit honors organization that recognizes and elevates high-achieving undergraduates who excel academically during their first and second year of college. NSCS provides career and graduate school connections, leadership and service opportunities and gives out more than $750,000 in scholarships, awards and chapter funds annually.
